Garibaldi Estates accident: District might consider traffic light in area

District of Squamish says it plans to redesign the Tantalus Road and Garibaldi Way intersection after a tragic accident that claimed the life of a toddler on February 28.

District of Squamish communications manager Christina Moore said the district is deeply saddened by the tragedy.

“We do have future plans to redesign the Tantalus Road and Garibaldi Way intersection to look at traffic management in that area,” Moore said.

She said the redesign may include a traffic light, but nothing has been decided yet.

“The redesign could include a traffic light, though not necessarily, depending on the best safety design for the intersection,” she said.

“We will consider all turning movements on the streets and in and out of the commercial driveways as part of that process,” she added.

Moore said the RCMP hasn’t yet provided any details about how the accident happened. That information could help the district asses any parking lot and traffic movement in the area.

“The parking lot where the accident happened is privately-owned, and so the district has little direct control over traffic movements there,” she said.

The accident at the busy parking lot claimed the life of two-year-old  Ava Grace Gnanaprakasam happened around 6 pm on a busy Friday evening.

Squamish RCMP is investigating the accident.

Sea to Sky General Investigations Section, the Integrated Collision Analyst Reconstruction Service (ICARS), and the BC Coroner’s Service as well as Squamish RCMP are partnering to conduct a thorough investigation.

Meanwhile, a private Celebration of Life for Ava was held at the Squamish Funeral Chapel on March 6.

Ava’s family has thanked the community, police, caregivers and health workers for their support.

    You think!
It’s been asked for many times, years after years and it took two deaths and many in accidents to possibly consider it!
    Really!
The planning authorities should be held responsable for negligence.
I am a mom and I feel sick to my stomach.
