A police dog sniffed out a suspect in Britannia Beach after a Facebook tip helped police locate a stolen van in the area.

Squamish RCMP were contacted by an owner of a gold Westfalia van which had been stolen from Vancouver four days earlier.

The owner had posted pictures of her missing van on Facebook, and someone messaged her saying they had spotted the van in a Britannia Beach parking lot.

Squamish RCMP officers found the van with a man sleeping in the driver’s seat. Meanwhile, police were informed of another suspect in the area.

The female suspect was located in the area with the assistance of an Integrated Police Dog Services Officer and his police service dog named Kal.

A 45-year-old man from Vancouver, Mohamad Gandomi, was charged with possession of stolen property. The female suspect that was found by service dog Kal was held on outstanding warrants from Surrey and New Westminster.

“Squamish RCMP were fortunate to work alongside the local Integrated Police Dog Service members and have them serve the communities in the Sea to Sky corridor” said Sergeant Sascha Banks.
