Conservation Officer Service, police to patrol local provincial parks

staff report
May 15, 2020 12:05pm

Conservation Officer Service (COS) will continue to patrol provincial parks this long weekend to ensure public safety.

COS said it would assist BC Parks in Squamish in enforcing restrictions related to COVID-19.

Yesterday, the province opened up several provincial parks, including the Stawamus Chief, Alice Lake and Brackendale Eagles and Brandywine Falls. Conservation Officer Service is also reminding people that the backside trail of the Stawamus Chief mountain is closed.

Squamish RCMP will also be working with BC Parks, fishers, COS and other agencies to ensure everyone is safe and practising social distancing and complying with regulations.

Squamish RCMP also had a message for visitors coming to town: “It is your responsibility to check closures and avoid non-essential travel.”

BC Government is also asking people to avoid non-essential travel and enjoy the weekend close to home.

“By continuing to avoid non-essential travel, British Columbians can do their part to protect vulnerable people in communities from COVID-19,” the government said.

BC Government is urging people to not travel to vacation homes or go pleasure boating at this time.

“Access to resources and health care may be more challenging in smaller communities if someone should become ill or if there’s a community outbreak,” the province said.

Province is also asking people to recreate at their own provincial parks. “Some parks will remain closed due to potential challenges with high numbers of anticipated visitors. If you get to your favorite park and find it busy, come back another time,” it said.
