BC Transit and the District of Squamish have suspended the bus route to the gondola and local provincial parks.

The 5 South Parks route took passengers from the Chieftain Centre to Shannon Falls and Stawamus provincial parks and the Sea to Sky Gondola.

The bus route that started last year after a trial run in 2018 also allowed gondola pass holders to ride for free.

The route was supposed to be operational on June 15.

“The status of this route is being considered in the context of the significant drop in ridership due to COVID-19 that is being experienced currently,” district said.

Another factor in the suspension is the fact that buses won’t be able to run at full capacity this summer due to physical distancing requirements.

BC Transit had earlier planned to add 500 hours to improve this route, with a possible extension to Britannia Beach.

Starting June 1, the downtown transit exchange will be relocated from the Chieftain Centre to the Squamish Public Library. All trips will now start and end at the library on Second Avenue.

Fares will not be collected at the Chieftain Centre if passengers are planning to switch buses at the library exchange.

The fare will be collected once passengers transition onto their correct bus. Fare collection and front-door boarding will begin on Monday, June 15.
