Locals can now access Squamish air quality alerts directly on cellphones via text message.
Starting today, BC is expanding the air quality alert subscription service beyond emails to allow people to receive real-time air quality advisories and smoky skies bulletins by text.
The text will alert the public about existing or potential poor air quality, while providing appropriate health advice and protective actions that can be taken.
Locals can sign up on the government website and select Squamish or Whistler to get local alerts. Air alert notifications can be received through text messages, emails or both.
Squamish is one of the 76 community-specific sites for which hourly data is processed, stored and posted on the B.C. air quality website.
“Whether for COVID-19-related reasons, for wildfire smoke information or for pure curiosity, you can now reach no further than your pocket to find out about the air quality around you,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.
BC has been providing air quality bulletins via email since September 2019.
