The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is planning on allowing temporary patio expansions to support existing pubs and restaurants.
RMOW says it is exploring an expedited review and approval process for the patios in a way that would allow businesses to safely serve patrons while complying with physical distancing and capacity limitations.
RMOW staff is talking to the Restaurant Association of Whistler (RAW), select food and beverage operators, and neighbourhood representatives to understand potential impacts.
Any use of public open space (both public and privately owned) for temporary patio use must be fair and equitable, and meet local bylaws and fire regulations, RMOW said.
Sufficient open space also needs to be maintained in and around Whistler’s commercial areas for the general public to feel welcome.
On June 9, staff will report to council on recommendations for temporary patios and the long term protection of the restaurant industry in Whistler.
As of now, RMOW is asking all food and beverage operators to only operate within their currently permitted patio areas.
Meanwhile, District of Squamish is also considering opening up sidewalks, roads and parking stalls for local businesses
