Squamish RCMP remind the community that kids are back in school and police would be patrolling school zones through the month.

Police are urging the community to be aware of all school zones and the higher number of children in and around schools during this month that the school is in session.

The school zones patrolling and enforcement would continue this month, said Sgt. Sascha Banks of the Squamish RCMP.

“We will be in school zones throughout the month.  When school is officially over, they will not be in effect, but playground zones remain in effect all year round,” she said.

Fines range from $196 to $253 for speeding over 30 kilometre per hour in a school zone. If speed is in excess of 40 kilometre per hour, fines range from $368 to $483. Those who disobey a school guard or patrol could face a possible fine of $167, and three points.

Police can also immediately impound the vehicle for seven days for those travelling 40 kilometre per hour or more over the posted speed limit, which could escalate to 30 or 60 days for repeat offenders, according to ICBC.

The owner is also required to pay the vehicle towing and storage fees to get their vehicle back. Citizens can contact the Squamish RCMP with their concerns at 604-892-6100.

Meanwhile, District of Squamish is also working on three safe routes to school projects that will be completed by fall.
