District seeks feedback on rezoning for downtown development

Staff report
June 19, 2020 2:50pm

The District of Squamish is seeking public feedback on a rezoning application for four mixed-use buildings with a shared two-storey parking structure in Downtown Squamish.

The proposed project, called Centro, is located on the three parcels at 1100, 1120 and 1140 Hunter Place, behind the Nesters Store.

If approved by council, the new rezoning would permit four seven-storey buildings, connected by a common two-storey parkade.

The development could begin next year but will take place in three phases over the next nine years.

A large open space would be located above the parkade at the third storey, where a child care facility is also being proposed.

About 28% of the building area is for employment use, with the rest being residential. As many as 249 apartment units are being proposed.

The developer is also seeking variance for 69 parking spots.

One of the four buildings will have some light industrial, retail and commercial at ground floor.

The developer is also undertaking a Traffic Impact Study that is currently being revised with input from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI).

Better accommodation of cyclists and pedestrians along Hunter Place and signage and improved intersections are some of the ideas that will inform the study.

Citizens can submit comments or questions here or contact the district by phone (604-815-5002) or email (planning@squamish.ca).

Comments can also be mailed or dropped off at the drop slot at Municipal Hall, 37955 2nd Avenue.

Four residential high density 7 floor buildings with only ground floor retail/industrial(??) space and a parking structure. What does Squamish get? This is industrial land (or was…). They are asking for less parking in a neighbourhood with no parking.
