Government of Canada has announced $2 million support for Vancouver Aquarium.
The federal funding will help the aquarium to reopen to visitors, cover operational costs and ensure the survival of its marine animals.
Operated by the Ocean Wise Conservation Association, the Vancouver Aquarium has been an iconic BC attraction for over 60 years.
COVID-19, however, has resulted in its closure over the past few months, hurting revenues, imperiling jobs and threatening the aquarium’s ability to provide for the thousands of animals in its care.
The Government of Canada is committed to providing the support and resources needed to ensure that British Columbia remains a world-leading tourist destination.
The Vancouver Aquarium is home to thousands of ocean species, including rescued seals, sea lions and otters.
Since closing the not-for-profit Vancouver Aquarium in March, the aquarium lost almost all revenues while still had to pay $1 million a month in animal care and facility costs.
“We are still fighting for the Vancouver Aquarium’s long-term survival, but this support from Western Economic Diversification Canada is crucial,” said Lasse Gustavsson, President and CEO, Ocean Wise Conservation Association.
The support will help the aquarium keep delighting visitors from across the Lower Mainland and around the world, said Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada
“Our message to the tourism industry is clear: we’re working with you to support good jobs and help BC tourism come back strong.”
