Base jumper flown to hospital after crash on Malamute

Staff report
July 13, 2020 10:57am

Squamish Search and Rescue, with the help of other local agencies, rescued a base jumper who had crashed on the Malamute.

The incident happened around 5:30 pm on Sunday, July 12, said B J Chute, the spokesperson for Squamish SAR.

As many as 20 SAR volunteers worked alongside the ambulance service and fire department to rescue the injured man.

He was located on a ledge on the Malamute and was rescued with help from Blackcomb Helicopters.

He was taken to Squamish elementary school and treated for possible spinal injuries and internal injuries, and later flown to a Vancouver area hospital.

Last Wednesday, SAR also rescued two hikers who were lost in the Slhanay summit area, near the gondola.

SAR volunteers located the hikers using GPS, and a search party was able to reach them via Mamquam Forest Service.
