The Province of BC is giving $1.3-million to expand the Sea to Sky Soils composting facility in Pemberton.
The expansion will increase organics processing, produce more high-quality compost, eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and create local jobs, the province said.
“People in the Squamish-Lillooet region will be able to grow their record of success, making sure more organics are turned into nutrient-rich soils, not landfill waste, the government said.
Sea to Sky Soils produces compost and soil amendments for local farmers and residents in the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, but has been operating at capacity.
The project is estimated to result in a reduction of over 47,000 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent – a standard unit for measuring carbon footprints from different greenhouse gases) by 2030.
The expansion project is also expected to provide employment opportunities for local First Nations.
“Our community is growing, and the residents in our region are very keen to support environmental sustainability and to be able to access local compost and soil,” said Tony Rainbow, board chair, SLRD.
