District seeks input on float plane dock

staff report
August 1, 2020 4:19pm

The District of Squamish is seeking feedback on a small seaplane dock being proposed by Harbour Air at the Oceanfront Squamish.

The District of Squamish has received an application for a development permit for the structure.

The application, if approved, would allow for the installation of a 30 m float plane dock, ramp, small wharfhead, and four temporary parking stalls in the south-east area of Nexen Beach in the Mamquam Blind Channel.

The dock would be used for float plane service that will connect Squamish with downtown Vancouver and Victoria terminals.

Initially, there will be one flight per week, and private charter service will also be available.

The company hopes to begin service by 2021.

The proposed dock, however, will be a temporary structure. When the Oceanfront Peninsula develops, a formal terminal may be created alongside the future development.

In December 2019, Harbour Air flew the world’s first all-electric commercial flight. The company is now working with regulators to achieve certifications and hopes to convert their entire fleet to become the world’s first all-electric airline.

Flights between downtown Vancouver and Squamish would be the ideal range for such an aircraft, says Daren Clark, Whistler Base Manager and Training Captain for Harbour Air Group.

“We are looking forward to supporting the community’s ongoing development and helping to welcome travellers, commuters and adventures alike to the ‘Adventure Capital of Canada’,” Clark says.

Locals can submit comments or questions here, or contact the district by phone (604-815-5002) or email (planning@squamish.ca).

Comments can also be mailed or dropped off at the drop slot at Municipal Hall – 37955 2nd Ave, Squamish, BC V8B 0A3.
