Tree thinning planned to prevent wildfires in Squamish

Staff report
August 2, 2020 11:29am

Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (MFLNRORD) will be working this summer to reduce the risk of wildfire in Squamish.

Tree thinning work will take place this summer in a 20-hectare area near Quest University to prevent wildfire.

Thinning will beginning on the Garibaldi Park Road just east of Quest University and will move eastward to the southern border of the Ring Creek residences.

This area is one of the highest wildfire risk areas.

The thinning will reduce the risk of wildfire to Squamish, and the Ring Creek community in particular.

It will also protect traffic along the Garibaldi Park Road, the only evacuation road for residents and tourists.

Removing excess fuel, including trees, underbrush and dry grassy fields, will reduce wildfire occurrence, severity and spread, prevent wildfire spreading into the tops of trees, and permit better access for crews responding to wildfire in this area.

Besides Squamish, forest management work will also take place in the Cheakamus Canyon area and in some areas in Pemberton.

This work will continue until March 2021.
