Starting today, single-lane access to the Spit

Staff report
August 10, 2020 10:49am

From today to August 31, there will only be single-lane access to the Squamish Spit road.

The road closure is part of the Central Estuary Restoration Project, which will remove an old culvert mid-way down the road and replace it with a new and larger fish-friendly opening.

The project timeline has been planned to coincide with a summer low tide period.  A full closure will begin the week of September 1, and will be in effect till September 24.

The vegetation alongside the culvert will be removed in order to clear the site.

The restoration project by Squamish Watershed Society aims to improve the natural integrity of the estuary and its ecological diversity.

The project will reduce obstructions and provide fish access to over 40 kilometers of ideal fish habitat in the upper section of the watershed.

The federal government recently gave $522,000 to the watershed society for the project.
