Local soccer coach Jose Oreamuno is hoping the community will pitch in to support him as he takes part in The Great Cycle Challenge to raise money for SickKids Foundation.

The cycle challenge invites people to raise funds by setting a personal target of kilometres to ride for the month of August.

Jose has mentored local youth for 40 years as a volunteer for the Squamish Youth Soccer Association.

Jose has so far raised $575 for the challenge and says he wants to help kids diagnosed with cancer to get a shot at a bright future.

“I am raising funds through my challenge to help these kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer,” he says.

Jose has chosen to ride his bike for 200 kilometres this month in his efforts to raise funds for kids, but says he is willing to double on the number of kilometres as more people contribute to his challenge.

Besides being fun, he says it is a great way to raise money for a worthy cause. As someone who loves to spend time with his grand kids, Jose says he feels lucky to not have anyone close to him suffering from cancer.

“When I look at my grand kids, I want them to have a long, happy and fulfilling life, and that is what I want for every kid,” he says.

In Canada, close to 1400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year.

Sick Kids Foundation raises funds to advance the study of cancer in children.

“It’s heartbreaking to see little guys suffering this ugly disease and parent can’t do a thing but be witness. I don’t want this to happen to any kid, and I am hoping I can make some difference,” he says.

Community members who wish to donate can even track Jose’s cycling progress here and donate to the cause.

“Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve. Your support will change little lives,” he says.
