Black bear destroyed at Whistler campsite

Staff report
August 19, 2020 9:33am

Conservation Officer Service destroyed a black bear at the Cal-Cheak Campground in Whistler on August 18.

Conservation Officers responded to a call from the Cal-Cheak Campground and found a bear feeding on garbage left out at the camp site.

Despite numerous attempts to haze the bear using non-lethal methods, the bear was destroyed after it charged aggressively towards an officer.

The offending campers were charged and evicted from the site immediately following the incident.

Conservation Officers spent additional time at the site to educate remaining campers on attractant management.

This is the second bear reported accessing attractants at the Cal-Cheak campsite in the past few days.

Conservation Officers have successfully hazed a tagged bear from the site but it is critical that this bear does not access additional food rewards, the service said.

The service is asking people to be Bear Aware and to report bear sightings in residential or park areas by phoning the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) at 1-877-952-7277

Ahhh once again we see a bear being destroyed because of human cause. Come on people do better than this. Do not feed the animals and don’t leave garbage out. Instead of killing animals, lock these people up.
