District to plan roundabouts in downtown and highlands

staff report
August 24, 2020 1:33pm

District of Squamish is planning to build a roundabout in Downtown Squamish, although the project could take anywhere from five to ten years.

The long-term planning is being done as the district expects an increase in traffic flow headed to the Oceanfront.

The roundabout will be built at the entrance to downtown.

“This refers to a potential restructuring of the entrance area between Buckley and Pemberton to improve the Bailey and Cleveland intersection,” said Rachel Boguski, the communications coordinator for the District of Squamish.

“It is taking into account increased traffic flow heading to the Oceanfront as it develops, and the eventual addition of traffic coming over the Pemberton bridge,” she added.

Boguski said the project was being considered in the next five to ten years based on the current rate of development.

More public and stakeholder engagement will take place once the district develops a concrete plan.

District of Squamish also envisions another roundabout at Garibaldi Highlands.

The roundabout is being planned at the intersection of Mamquam Road and Highland Way South, although the district may also change the stop sign orientation for better traffic flows.

Besides downtown, the district also envisions a roundabout at the intersection of Government Road and Centennial Way, although a signal light could also be installed here.

There are no timelines yet on the roundabout on Government Road or Mamquam Road intersections. These projects are part of the Development Cost Charge list, which are charges paid by developers for growth in town, particularly for new infrastructure such as water mains, sewer, roads and parks.

Don’t wait 10 years, the need is NOW, And forget traffic lights, build the roundabout and be done with it. Get on with it.

I have long thought that the intersection at Government Road and Centennial Way should be a 3-way stop. Government Road actually makes a 90 degree bend at that point and Centennial way accesses at the same point. It looks as though Centennial Way continues straight through onto Government Road but actually traffic should stop before entering Government Road and yield to Government Road traffic. Only longtime residents know this, probably.
