Squamish RCMP to start enforcing school speed zones

staff report
September 4, 2020 12:30pm

Squamish RCMP reminds that officers will be doing regular speed checks as local schools reopen on September 8.

Squamish RCMP reminds that school zones are in effect from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm.

“We’ll be doing regular speed checks to help keep students safe,” said Cpl. Angela Kermer of Squamish RCMP.

Squamish RCMP also reminds that police enforcement of seat belts is up. A ticket for not wearing one is $167 and police remind all drivers and passengers to buckle up.

Squamish RCMP also reminds that the fine for distracted driving is $368, along with four penalty points.

Upon first infraction a driver will pay a further $252 ICBC driver penalty point premium. The total for a first infraction is $620.

“Distracted driving now causes more fatal crashes in BC than impaired driving. When driving, take a break from your phone,” Cpl. Kermer said.

The local Rcmp should enforce motorcycle traffic on #99 any weekday from 5-9 pm. The volume and nature of their driving puts all motorists at risk. As well, more encore emend is badly needed on #99 within municipal boundaries.
