District plans to change the roof at local pool

Staff report
October 30, 2020 4:20am

The District of Squamish is planning to change the roof of the Squamish Aquatics Centre, a $1,100,000 project.

The project is part of a five-year financial plan for the Aquatic Centre that the district recently submitted to Squamish Lillooet Regional District.

The local pool is operated by the district but is owned by the SLRD.

The district also plans to include $40,000 for the light-replacement project.

A part of the submission to SLRD also contains plans for the water-feature replacement capital project amounting to $100,000.

SLRD will use these submissions from the district to determine the financial plan for 2021-2025.

Meanwhile, the pool at Brennan park is now open but all pool users are required to register in advance. Drop-in visits are still not permitted at this time.

The district is allowing bubble swimming, which is defined as six people or less from the same household or social group.

Hot tub, sauna, lockers and change room also remain closed at this time, but washrooms remain open.

The district reported to council in August that it experienced a revenue shortfall of $300,000 as arena, swimming pools and other local programs were shut down due to COVID-19.

According to the district’s current forecast, the revenue from the pool and aquatics will recover over the next two years to the same levels as seen in 2019.

COVID-19 has also delayed renovation at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

Extension of Pioneer Way, SODC road and stormwater main project, improvements at rail crossings, water-system replacement and dike rehabilitations are other capital project that the district won’t undertake this year.
