Sturdy wins by thin margin; judicial recount to happen

staff report
November 7, 2020 5:38pm

Jordan Sturdy has won the West Vancouver-Sea to Sky electoral district, although a judicial recount will take place to confirm that victory.

Elections BC has completed the final count of absentee and mail-in ballots for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky electoral district.

As many as 9,216 were cast for Jordan Sturdy, 37.52 per cent of the total valid votes.

Green Part candidate Jeremy Valeriote came a very close second with 9,175 votes, which is 37.35 per cent of the votes.

BC NDP candidate, Keith Murdoch, won 6,174 votes, which is 25.13 per cent of the total votes cast.

Under the Election Act, a judicial recount must take place if, at the conclusion of final count, the difference between the top two candidates is less than 1/500 of the total ballots considered.

In West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, the threshold for a judicial recount is 49 votes. The difference between Sturdy and Valeriote is 41 votes.

A judicial recount is conducted by the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and may include some or all of the ballots and certification envelopes for an election.

The timing of the recount will be determined by the court. A total of 24,769 votes were considered by Elections BC.
