District must implement traffic calming on Tantalus Road

Staff report
February 3, 2021 11:47am

A local resident is imploring the district to implements traffic calming measure immediately on Tantalus Road.

The resident is also asking for a lit pedestrian cross walk to be installed at the south end of Greenside Estates and Galleries building with signage on both sides age indicating that this is a residential area.

“Over the last few years, I have watched in utter dismay as drivers have regarded Tantalus Road as a secondary highway, particular while driving northbound past the Meighan Creek and Alpen loft apartments,” the local wrote.

Traffic volume was further aggravated with the opening of highway egress in 2017, the population increase in SkyRidge, and the addition of a new school, she said.

By 2022, the neighbourhood will increase by more than 200 people as the Wilfred building comes online.

In the last six months, there have been horrific car accidents on Tantalus Road as speeding vehicles have lost control at the south end of this area, and many of the neighbours have been impacted by these accidents in various ways, the local said.

“I am also aware of the varying constraints with regards to the Motor Vehicle Act, bylaw enforcement, budgets, and road engineering practices. Most of us in the area would be happy to work with DOS or RCMP to do whatever we can to slow drivers and make this area safe.”

I notice an electronic speed control sign out side of Mamquam school. It would be wonderful if we had a couple of these on Tantalus Rd. and placed on Garibaldi Way as well. The signs would be equipped with two cameras, one of the front on the sign and one on the back. So photos of speeding vehicles license places would be taken.
