District plans a new recycling depot in Squamish

The District of Squamish is planning an additional recycling depot in town.

The district says it will provide better coverage and more disposal options for materials that are not accepted in the curbside collection program.

The 2021 budget includes $28,750 for pre-design of the recycling depot and $57,500 for pre-design for the landfill expansion.

This would also include expanding the transfer station and recycling depot.

A needs assessment will be done to identify possible site locations, said Rachel Boguski, media relations for District of Squamish.

The timing for the construction of the additional recycling depot will be determined as part of the pre-design work in 2021, she said.

In January, District of Squamish raise landfill tipping fees.

The fees were increased to cover the cost of the vertical expansion of the landfill, district said.

District says residents can save on tipping fees by separating organics and recyclable materials from garbage before they go to landfill..

There is no charge for material that can be recycled, which includes books, car batteries, cardboard, clothes, food scraps, plastic bags, plastic containers, mixed paper, paint.

Is there any intent to provide any upgraded services for green waste/yard waste. Especially for fall/spring clean up.
