District plans to install ‘covered structures’ downtown

Staff report
March 15, 2021 11:51am

The District of Squamish is looking for contractors that can supply and install covered structures in Stan Clark Park and on Cleveland Ave.

The district bid documents do not specify where on Cleveland Avenue the structures will be installed.

The district says it has recognized a lack of covered structures in the downtown area of Squamish to protect against rain and snow.

Two covered structures have been proposed for the downtown area.

The district says that while the structures would be simple, they need to be flexible, adaptable, and should be constructed in such a way that they can be moved.

The district hopes to have a covered structure in the park by April 20.

The covered structures are part of a COVID-19 plan to increase the use of municipal parks, and to allow people to gather safely in public parks.

The covered structure is expected to cost $108,000.

Another district plan is to increase use of municipal parks with parklets or covered structures for parks.

Packaged, pre-built or modular solutions would be sourced. The district plans to do this in 2021.

The district also plans to hire a Parks Infrastructure Coordinator, a term role that will oversee the implementation of the covered spaces and parklet or container projects.
