RCMP allowed to set up road checks to enforce non-essential travel

The Province is authorizing site-specific road checks between regions to enforce the non-essential travel restrictions.

The road checks may be put in place at any time until 12:01 am on May 25, 2021.

Province will let RCMP set up road checks on highway corridors that connect regions  to remind travellers of the order.

However, police will only have the authority to request a driver’s name, address and driver’s license. , and any available documentation regarding driver’s name and address.

Police cannot engage in arbitrary vehicle or street checks.

If police have reasonable grounds to believe that a person has travelled for a non-essential purpose, they can direct the traveller to turn around and leave the region.

Officers will have the power to hand out a $575 fine.

The regional zones are Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, which will include Fraser Health and Coastal Health regions. Other zones are Vancouver Island health region and the Northern/Interior (Interior Health and Northern Health regions).
