Like many others in the community, 2020 was a tough year for local singer and songwriter Will Ross — with weddings and other gigs cancelled, a well-planned year went awry, leaving Will with few avenues to generate income.
A flood at his home in Valleycliffe further stretched his patience and finances and a break-up later in the year brought anxiety and depression in its wake.
Unexpectedly, the result was a documentary called, “Who Am I, I am,” an admixture of new songs and ruminations on mental health, depression, ego, consciousness and relationships in a world turned upside down all of a sudden.
The 32-minute documentary was shot in Valleycliffe by Jared Macgougan of Lumina Weddings and Events. It flows back and forth between the Valleycliffe trail network and Sound and Soul Studios in Squamish where Will recorded his songs.
Will calls the documentary “a quick little journey” into who he is and the reasons why he creates music.
“I wanted to create this Doc so that I could put into place and release a lot of anxiety and negativity that was steamrolling my brain over the past year. The reason I wanted to create a movie for others is because I certainly know I am not alone in this human experience and the turmoil that people have undergone in the past year,” he says.
The documentary, he says, served as an outlet for him to sort things out and share his experience of a rough year so others can also realise that they are not alone.
Will is grateful to the community who donated $1,500 to create this documentary, and also expresses his gratitude to Nino at Sound and Soul and Sara Marrocco for creating a new website for him where people can watch this documentary.
The documentary can be watched at his website, and music lovers can also follow Will on Instagram and his channel on YouTube.
“I will be doing my best to create new content to share regularly moving forward. Thank you from the bottom of my heart in advance for taking the time to watch, and I hope that it resonates with you in some way,” Will says.
