The Sea to Sky Community Services Society is organising a World Elder Abuse Awareness Event in Squamish on Wednesday, June 16.
The event will take place from 10 am to 12 pm at Pavilion Park on Cleveland Avenue in Downtown Squamish.
A medical supplier will be on site from 10am to noon on June 16th to perform safety checks on walkers.
Free refreshments and information about elder abuse prevention will also be presented. The event is being organised by The Sea to Sky Community Response Network in partnership with the Better at Home program at Sea to Sky Community Services.
The Sea to Sky CRN includes community, social, and health service organizations, government agencies, community minded individuals, and seniors.
According to Ministry of Health documents, approximately 10 per cent of seniors will experience some form of physical, emotional, financial, or sexual abuse.
It is also believed that abuse of seniors is significantly under reported.
“Older adults in our communities continue to find themselves in vulnerable situations and are still experiencing various forms of abuse and neglect,” said Sherry Baker, Executive Director of the BC Association of Community Response Networks (BC CRN).
