District of Squamish will replace the emergency exit stairs at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre in time for the upcoming ice user season.
There are two steel emergency exit stairs leading outside from the bleachers of the arena in the Brennan Park Arena.
In 2018, an engineer inspected them and found they had deteriorated over the 37 years of use and needed to be replaced.
While one set of stairs was removed in 2019, a temporary set was installed for the other set.
District planned to complete the work last year and even hired a Campbell River contractor, but the project couldn’t be completed because of COVID-19.
The second set of stairs was however removed last fall, and an inspector found significant issues with the quality of the soil. The district has now hired Roma Building Restorations to finish the work of supplying and installing the metal stairs.
The stairs need to be in place prior to hockey and ice skating season starts in September 2021.
