The Squamish Windsports Society and Realignnotremove.ca are inviting the community to take part in the Spit Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 21, from 11 am to 2 pm.
“It is a way to bring together all members of the Squamish community to see how special the Spit is, and why it is an important part of the Squamish community, an area where everyone can access the Ocean,” said Nikki Layton, the president of the access society.
The access to the Spit is scheduled to be removed in the winter, which makes it the last time when locals will be able to enjoy this type of event unless the community works together to find a long-term solution to maintain access.
“Our community has very limited safe places where people can enter the water and the Spit is one of them and we wanted to celebrate that with as many people as we could while we still could,” Layton said.
“The Spit is a unique area where the wind, water, and nature all interact in a way that we humans don’t often get to witness. By having access out into the ocean the residents of the Sea to Sky area get to enjoy, educate, and entertain themselves in the sea,” she said.
This event is designed to bring together the community and celebrate the wind and the water.
There will be a traditional welcome by a Squamish Nation Elder around 11 am.
The Lion’s Club is running the BBQ and people of all ages can fly trainer kites, lent by Squamish Watersports.
There will also be a sandcastle building competition from 12 to 1 pm with a prize from North Shore Ski and Board for the lucky winner.
Coastal Stoke is bringing out Stand Up Paddleboards for people to try and there will also be some kayaks too. Several organizations from around town will be part of the event.
