Due to several incidents involving an aggressive, food-conditioned bear, Cheakamus Lake Trail, Cheakamus Lake Campground, and Singing Creek campground have been closed until further notice by BC Parks.
BC Parks is working with the Conservation Officer Service to monitor and respond to the situation.
However, Helm Creek campground remains open, but is not accessible via Cheakamus Lake. Current access is only via Rubble Creek (Garibaldi Lake, Taylor Meadows, Panorama Ridge).
BC Parks cautions that this is a significantly longer hike — plan ahead appropriately before beginning the trip.
“Please remember it is everyone’s responsibility to store food and essentials appropriately in the backcountry. Do not be the reason why a bear is destroyed,” says BC Parks.
“It is illegal to leave food and/or garbage unsecured and unattended. Campers failing to ensure their camp is secure of attractants may be evicted from the park and issued a violation ticket under the BC Wildlife Act. Please do your part to ensure the safety of your family, fellow campers, and the local bears, by keeping a clean camp”
