Squamish RCMP investigating CRA phone scam

Staff report
August 26, 2021 11:41am

Squamish RCMP is investigating a report of fraud in the community.

A local resident was contacted by fraudsters who posed as officials from the Canada Revenue Agency, and asked the resident to withdraw $2,700 from his bank account.

The scammers then sent the local a QR code for a Bitcoin Wallet, and told the complainant to deposit the money into that account.

The complainant called his bank once he realized he was being duped.

Legitimate CRA employees who contact Canadians will identify themselves as CRA agents and provide their name and a telephone number.

If you receive a call from the CRA, tell them you would like to first verify their identity by the caller’s name, phone number, and office location.

Check that the call you received was legitimate by contacting the CRA at the number that you look up yourself on the CRA website before you provide any information to the caller.

To report a scam, visit antifraudcentre.ca or call 1-888-495-8501. If you think you may be the victim of fraud or you unknowingly provided personal or financial information, contact your local police service, financial institution, and credit reporting agencies.

Anyone with any information regarding the above files are asked to contact the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or go to the website www.solvecrime.ca
