A local woman is organising a GoFundMe for her friend facing an amputation of the leg.

Ulina Rakurea is urging the community to support Stacy Hughes who was born with one leg much shorter than the other.

Since she was four years old, Stacey has undergone over 70 painful surgeries, had many pins, screws, braces and rods placed inside and outside of her left leg, and spent countless hours in hospitals dealing with this disability.

None of these surgeries have been fully successful, which caused her to develop drop foot so she has to walk on her tip toes constantly, resulting in the fusion of bones in her foot in an extremely painful position.

Stacey has made the incredibly difficult choice to have her leg amputated below the knee.

“This enormous change will be physically, mentally, emotionally and psychologically arduous but this decision did not come lightly, especially after many years and surgeries trying to live a normal, pain-free life,”Ulina says.

Besides transportation and loss of income and other unexpected costs, Stacy’s prosthetic leg will cost anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000, and she will likely be unable to return to work for at least a year.

“I am rallying for support from friends, family and the community to help. Please, anything you can donate to help would be so very appreciated,” Ulina says.
