‘Very windy conditions’ in store for Howe Sound

Staff report
October 22, 2021 5:18pm

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Howe Sound.

Very windy conditions are in forecast beginning Sunday for Howe Sound, Sunshine Coast, Southern Gulf Islands, Greater Victoria, Metro Vancouver, and North Shore.

The statement is in effect from Sunday morning to Monday afternoon.

A strong rapidly deepening low pressure system from the Pacific will approach west of Vancouver Island on Sunday and begin to bring rain and strong southeasterly winds of 70 to 90 km/h with gusts possibly exceeding 100 km/h to West & North Vancouver Island in the morning.

Strong southeasterly winds of 50 to 70 km/h gusting to 90 will develop over East Vancouver Island Sunday afternoon.

The strong winds will persist through Sunday night and strengthen on Monday morning across the coastal regions of the Strait of Georgia, including Greater Victoria, Southern Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast.

As the low pressure system moves closer inland overnight, the western sections of Metro Vancouver and southern sections of Howe Sound will also see southeasterly winds strengthening Monday morning to 50 gusting to 80 km/h.

The winds will begin to taper on Monday afternoon.
