Increase in offensive behaviour at landfill prompts District action

Gagandeep Ghuman

District of Squamish will create a specific policy and procedures after an increase in offensive behaviour by customers at the Squamish Landfill.

In an update to Council on the Solid Waste Utility Bylaw, District staff says there has been increase in the number of customers who engage in offensive behavior or harass the staff at the landfill.

The staff is also concerned about customers who act inappropriately at the landfill.

The harassment has even led to one case of a customer being investigated by Squamish RCMP, though the report doesn’t provide any specific details of this incident.

District is working on a supplementary policy for the landfill staff on procedures to follow while dealing with customers who harass staff or act inappropriately at the landfill.

Customers can face bans for not paying at the landfill and for engaging in harassing behaviour.

It is hard to imagine what justification someone might have in mind to harass employees who have nothing to do with to setting of District policies. The District has struggled with landfill issues for decades. The every expanding number of households just makes matter worse. I thinks that it is just sloppy and lazy thinking that causes people to target innocent victims. If you have an issue with something direct your ire at the persons responsible, not the hired help.
