A child care centre, a new indoor bike park, and a destination play area for families are some new facilities being planned at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre.
Council will discuss the facilities as part of a Brennan Park Fields and Lands Master Plan at a Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, December 14.
District plans to invite bids for a proposal to operate an Indoor Bike Skills Park in the current camping area near Loggers Lane.
However, it is a medium-term goal, something the District plans to complete in five years or more.
The District also plans to enhance the existing BMX, Skate Park, and the Mountain Bike Skills Parks, and will invite private operators to improve and operate those facilities.
Squamish BMX and SORCA are also being encouraged to submit proposals to improve and operate facilities in their current locations.
The district is planning to add a temporary modular child day care facility with a fenced-in play area at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre.
However, there are also plans to build a permanent child day care centre with an outdoor space in the main Brennan Park facility.
The district is also considering developing destination water park and beach volleyball, along with a picnic area to the north of the recreation centre. Also being considered is a partnership with the Squamish Nation to develop a Lacrosse Box near the existing tennis and pickle ball courts.
The basketball community is being encouraged by the district to fundraise to create courts at Brennan Park near the existing tennis courts.
Jim Harvey says
All of the proposed upgrades to Brennan Park seem appropriate and timely, EXCEPT the proposed indoor bike park. I must be missing something. Squamish is one of the premier destinations worldwide for mountain biking. I would suggest that every day of the year there will be people outside mountain biking. There are numerous jump/skills parks throughout the community. Squamish is full of incredibly skilled young mountain bikers and their numbers grow each year. I am an avid mountain biker but I do not support an indoor bike park funded by municipal taxes.
Now, a public, indoor climbing gym that serves a sport totally impacted by our wet weather would make a lot more sense.
