West Vancouver seawalk closed after flooding

Staff report
January 10, 2022 10:36am

The West Vancouver Seawalk remains closed between 19th Street and 25th Street as crews clean up the debris left from the storm surge that forced the closure of the seawalk.

The Ambleside and Dundarave piers are also closed, and the district is urging people to avoid these areas and obey closure signage.

A combination of king tide and high winds created a storm surge on Friday, January 7, that resulted in Ambleside and Dundarave waterfront parks being flooded. District of West Vancouver says it is one of the worst events the community has seen in decades.

However, it is not unexpected, the district adds.

There is significant debris to clean up and damaged areas will remain closed while repair work is underway. The Ferry Building Gallery that is under restoration has been raised to allow for such an event and is safe, says the district.

District says the risk will continue to increase with sea-level rise in the future, as projected in the 2018 North Shore Sea Level Rise Strategy and other sea-level rise modelling done by the District.
