60 holidays hampers distributed by Howe Sound Women’s Centre

"We are very grateful to the community of donors who once again met the challenge of supporting so many families during what is traditionally an incredibly stressful time of year for some," says Ashley Oakes, the executive director of the women's centre.

This holiday season, Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society (HSWC) distributed holiday hampers to 60 families, up from 49 in December 2020.

HSWC’s holiday hamper program matches generous donors with a family in need. Holiday hamper donors are provided information about their matched family’s demographics including number of children and their ages as well as the family’s holiday wish list. They then play the part of holiday elves and make a family’s holiday wishes a reality.

“HSWC’s holiday hamper program shows the outpouring of generosity in our community. Hamper donors provide families with all they need to make the holiday season special and in doing so relieve an incredible amount of stress on families facing uncertainty or violence.” Said Ashley Oakes, HSWC’s executive director.

In addition to the hamper program, HSWC also provides for single clients through the Fill-a-Bag program. The Fill-A-Bag encourages donations of new or gently used bags, filled with essentials and special items that are distributed at the holiday’s but also throughout the year. In December 2021, donors helped us fill over 40 bags with essential items. These much-needed items will continue to be distributed, as needed, to those who access our services in the coming months.

“We are very grateful to the community of donors who once again met the challenge of supporting so many families during what is traditionally an incredibly stressful time of year for some. Your willingness to extend your generosity to a family in need is extraordinary and humbling. Thank you for your compassion and support.”
