BC Loblaws Superstore workers vote in favour of a strike

staff report
May 19, 2022 1:44pm

Loblaw’s Superstore and Distribution Centre employees have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike.

The members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike by 97%. However, this doesn’t mean workers will stop working at the stores, but it’s an ‘important tool’ the union says to bring Loblaws back to the bargaining table.

“Thank you to all of you who have voted, every vote counts and your support for the strike mandate was a necessary to tell the Company that unless they bargain fairly, the employees could withdraw their labour,” said UFCW 247.

“This is an important tool to push Loblaw to come back to the table and this strong mandate sends Loblaw a strong message about their last offer.”

The strike vote saw a strong turnout from Loblaw union members across the province, the statement from the union said, adding that they have notified the Company of the results.

A strike vote is valid for three months after the date of the vote and that the Union is only required to serve 72 hours’ notice of strike action to the Company.
