Public advised about construction work at Oceanfront Squamish

Staff report
May 20, 2022 6:17am

Oceanfront Squamish is advising the public of construction work that will take place on the north end of the site. This work will take place until May 27.

Matcon Civil Constructors will perform remediation works at the former BC Rail site on the Oceanfront under the supervision of a qualified environmental professional.

This work involves removing 800 cubic metres of contaminated soils to be replaced with clean certified fill. Due to the nature of the contamination, staff will be required to wear hazmat suits while this work is being carried out.

Please be advised there is no risk to public health and safety, but Matthews West asks that the public stay out of private property. Taylor Woods, the director of operations for Oceanfront Squamish, said the construction will take place near the site entrance, but doesn’t limit the current access to the trails that are open to the public.

“Most of the work taking place on site is currently at the south end of the peninsula, whereas this is taking place at the north end and may be noticed by some who currently access the temp public parking to use the trails so we wanted to alert users to new action on site,” she said.
