Squamish Search and Rescue crews were able to guide back hikers lost on the Stawamus Chief trail and Murrin park trails to safety this week. BJ Chute, the SAR manager, said two hikers called 911 to report they were lost as they were making their way to the third peak of the Chief.
SAR crews were able to locate them using the GPS location on their phone and were able to guide them back on the trail. The call came in the evening and although there was still light, the hikers made the right decision to call 911, said Chute.
Last week, SAR crews also assisted the Squamish RCMP in locating two hikers who were lost while hiking at Murrin Park. It was supposed to be a quick post-dinner hike, but both hikers were unable to make their way back and called for help. The SAR team was able to locate them and provided them with food and water and headlamps so they could make their way back to safety.
SAR crews also helped a woman who had suffered a knee injury while bouldering in the Stawamus Chief area. She was treated by BC Ambulance and taken to hospital. SAR crews were also called about two mountain biker who had injured themselves at the trail behind Quest University. Given the remote area and difficulty in driving there, both were brought to safety with the help of a helicopter.
