Local business groups raise concerns about parking, transit

Gagandeep Ghuman
June 11, 2022 10:40am

Three local groups are urging the District of Squamish and the Province to act swiftly on critical issues such as transit, transportation, parking and snow clearing in the community.

The three groups are Squamish Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Squamish, and the Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association (DSBIA). Collectively, The Squamish Chamber, Tourism Squamish and Downtown Squamish BIA represent hundreds of businesses in the Squamish community.

In a letter written to the Squamish Mayor, MLA Sturdy and the labour and transportation minister, the groups said they urge immediate and long-term action to address critical shortfalls in the transit, parking and walking/cycling infrastructure of Squamish.

These gaps, they say, have impacted local businesses, employees and customers negatively.

“The confluence of rapid population growth in the District of Squamish (DOS) with a transit strike now in its fifteenth week has compelled the Squamish Chamber of Commerce (SCC), Tourism Squamish (TS) and the Downtown Squamish BIA (DSBIA) to share with you our serious concerns about the impact of transit and transportation on the local economy,” they write.

Three local groups have also made several recommendations on how local and regional transit must be strengthened, and parking solutions explored in the community.
