A black bear was euthanized after being struck by a vehicle near Horseshoe Bay. The accident happened around 2 pm on Friday near Horseshoe Bay. The bear suffered critical injuries and had to be euthanized.
Conservation Officer Simon Gravel said the bear’s back was broken in the accident and it was euthanized on site. The bear was a juvenile female. Gravel is urging drivers on the highway to slow down and be vigilant on local highways. He also urged people to report any animal in distress on the highway.
DriveBC is also urging caution after a bear was killed after being struck by a vehicle on the highway in Hazelton last week. “B.C. has the most comprehensive inventory of wildlife warning signs in the world. Watch for the wildlife warning signs, which are posted at areas where experience shows animals are likely to be on the road,” says the province.
If you see a large dead animal in the road, please call the police or highway maintenance contractor as the body would need to be removed from the traffic lanes before it causes an accident.
