Campground in Garibaldi Provincial Park closed due to aggressive bear

An aggressive and food conditioned bear has been bothering park visitors in the Cheakamus area of Garibadi Provincial Park.

In an effort to reduce attractants again, Singing Creek campground will also be closed until further notice.

Day use visits to unclosed areas are still available at this time, but visitors must be bear aware: Travel in groups, make noise on the trail, never leave attractants unattended, and bring bear spray and know how to use it.

“If you see a bear on the trail, do not approach it. Wait for it to move out of the area or slowly back away and leave if the bear isn’t moving,” cautions BC Parks.

BC Parks also cautions that high heat and unseasonably large snowpack have caused multiple areas to become inaccessible in the Garibaldi Provincial Park – impacting facilities and blocking access.

Areas will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. Garibaldi Lake campground and day use area remains closed until the lake recedes to a safe level. Hikers can still access Panorama Ridge, Black Tusk, and the traverse to Helm Creek and Cheakamus Lake by travelling through Taylor Meadows.

Cheakamus Lake campground is also closed until further notice due to flooding in the area. Rampart Ponds campground cannot be safely reached due to melting snow and high water.
