Squamish First will advocate and defend the interests of seniors in Squamish, the group says.
In a press release, Squamish First said the Seniors Centre Society feels that nobody is advocating for them on council. Mike Young and Squamish First are taking a public stand to defend their interests and priorities.
“If elected, at municipal hall I will advocate for and be the voice of our seniors. There is no place in politics for behind closed-door meetings unless the issue requires protection under privacy legislation. Agreements with our community members need to be honored, non-senior related activities should not be displacing seniors programming, period. I think that committees need to be respectful of already existing committees, everyone should be at the table” said Mike Young in the press statement.
Squamish First will ensure that programming for seniors is expanded with a new Rec Centre. In the short term, the group vows to solve conflicting space challenges by utilizing schools for younger age group activities.
Squamish First will ensure that they protect a space for seniors that prioritizes their programs and activities. In addition, they plan on streamlining committees so that there are no redundancies and overlap with the mission of the Squamish Seniors Centre Society ‘to assist in the provision and operation of a centre for the recreational, educational and social activities for the Senior Citizens of the Squamish area.
