Off-leash dog area to open in Brackendale in early 2023

An off-leash dog location is expected to open in Brackendale in early 2023.

The off-leash area is located under the BC Hydro lines in Brackendale and will open early next year, though no dates have yet been finalized.

The off-leash area will open in an existing trail in Brackendale that runs from Squamish Valley Road down to Depot Road under the BC Hydro right-of-way, though it does not extend to the forested trails on either side of the power lines right-of-way.

There are two categories of off-leash dog locations: Off-leash dog areas will make use of the natural habitat and have open areas for ball throwing and socializing. Off-leash dog trails will allow dogs to run and get exercise over a greater distance with their owners. The off-leash area in Brackendale will fall under the latter category.

The first off-leash area opened at Merrill Park in the Garibaldi Highlands in summer, and two more are planned, at the John Hunter Park in Valleycliffe and a fenced dog run at Brennan Park.

Council has also directed staff to find a suitable pilot off-leash dog location in Downtown Squamish.
