The District of Squamish will engage the public this month for the Garibaldi Estates Neighborhood Planning Process.
The six-week engagement process begins on February 14 when District will release several land-use scenarios in the Garibaldi Estates. The District will host seven in-person discussions on the issue in detail. The planning staff has divided Garibaldi Estates into six sub areas for future land uses: Commercial, Diamond Head North, Estates North, Diamond Head South, Estates Centre, and Estates East.
According to a staff report to council, existing land uses will be permitted in all scenarios, along with the possibility of new housing forms and more height or density.
The engagement sessions will give residents a chance to speak with District staff, ask questions, and provide feedback in a conversational setting. There will be some online opportunities available for residents who are unable or prefer not to attend in-person. Residents will be asked to register for a meeting as the engagement dates are released, and more information will be released on District’s social medic channels.

The District’s policy of filling up the Squamish valley with high density housing is suspect given that there are only two ways to get up and down the valley, namely Highway 99 and Government Road. I guess that by now probably 80% of the work force has to commute. I think that the District should develop a plan for transportation before going any further.

More of the same from the crew at Muni Hall. A lot of time wasted, a lot of money spent, while pretending to listen to the people most affected. The outcome has already been predetermined ….”existing land uses will be permitted in all scenarios, along with the possibility of new housing forms and more height or density “… The favoured developers will be happy!
It’s just about time to stop dreaming up ways to save the world and to start focusing on the current needs of Squamish such as our infrastructure eg. water, sewer and roadways repair. The thinking that prioritizes a new works yard and a 10 million dollar detour around a long established route through North Yards instead of two required fire halls has to change.
