Squamish council will discuss a Temporary Use Permit application by FortisBC at an upcoming Committee of the Whole meeting. FortisBC has applied for a workforce lodge for its temporary workforce in an area south of Quest University.
The seven-acre temporary camp for 600 workers is planned in an area south of Quest University with access from Mamquam Forest Service Road. The project will begin mid-2023 and continue to the end of 2025. There was a previous proposal that would have workers living in town, but the company says the temporary camp will address pressure on local housing, traffic and other community resources.
District staff will present the applications for the camp and a construction yard to Council at the February 14 meeting at 9 am. Council feedback and discussion will follow the presentation.
However, there will be no opportunity for the public to comment during this meeting. Seating is limited in council chambers, though overflow seating will be available in the lobby. Residents are encouraged to watch the livestream and video recording at Squamish.ca.
Written and email submissions can be delivered to Municipal Hall addressed to the Director of Community Planning or emailed to hearing@squamish.ca.
Francine says
Once the camp is done with, it should be reutilized and set up as emergency camp site for the homeless or anyone that can qualify for temporary housing. It could be devided into two site. One as homeless shelter camp and as emergency camp since BC as had a fair share of natural disaters where having housing to help the displaced.
This is the commitment that Fortis should promise the Province in exchange for all the concession they were given.
The province could aquire its been done before the camp from Tumbler ridge was sold and move to Whistler.
