A new waterfront community park is expected to be complete for the public this summer. The park that includes a lagoon and waterfront walkway is under construction on the northern side of the SEAandSKY subdivision and is expected to be complete in June.
Work on the park began in 2018 and will be complete in two phases. While the first phase is likely to open in June, the second phase of the park is expected to open next year. Called the Waterfront Park North on Mamquam Blind Channel, the new park is a community amenity contribution from the developer and a condition of the new subdivision.
The park will provide public gathering space close to the boardwalk and have other features such as playgrounds and a pump track along with trails and pathways. Owned by the District, it will also include a tidal lagoon, lookout points, and active play areas as well as natural areas and a restored shoreline. The park will be accessible from downtown via the proposed pedestrian bridge crossing to Victoria Street.
At a council meeting today, District of Squamish councillors will also consider a request from the developers to amend the land development agreement for the second phase of the park. The agreement required that the park be built before the occupancy reaches 300 units, but the development will likely exceed the requirement of 300 units before the park is built. The proposed amendment will revises this requirement to say the second phase of the park will be complete before the final occupancy permit is issued for Phase 3 of the development.
