District of Squamish has received a rezoning application for new townhomes on Government Road. A successful rezoning would change the land designation from RS-2 to RM-2 to allow 26 townhomes on the site.

The townhomes are proposed on the eastern portion of 40279 Government Road on an approximately 1.5 acre site. 59 parking spaces are proposed, seven of which will be visitor parking.  As many as 21 townhomes will be three-bedroom unit and five will be two bedroom plus den, according to documents posted on District’s development show case.

There is considerable private open space that most units will have access to, said the proponent, Sunny Grewal. A local resident who was born and raised in town, Grewal said the infill proposal brings gentle density to an area that is close to amenities and has similar style of housing. “We are in the middle of a housing crisis and this is an infill site that would provide housing for families,” Grewal said.

He noted that the site is walking distance from Mamquam Elementary School as well as from shops and restaurants in the Garibaldi Village. “The area consists of various forms of housing. Families would be able to walk to the school and to the restaurants and shops by using a pedestrian bridge to Garibaldi Village,” he said.

The rezoning application has yet to come before council.

You are taking this beautiful town into condo city. The beautiful landscape is disappearing so fast. I’ve been here 4years now and the beautiful landscape is disappearing so fast. Such a shame!!!
