District of Squamish is warning the public about campfire ban in public spaces after Squamish Fire Rescue extinguished a fire in Brackendale. On May 31, Squamish Fire Rescue received reports of a wildfire in the wooded area of Ray Peters Trail at the end of Ross Road in Brackendale.
Crews arrived to discover an unattended campfire that was producing a large amount of smoke. This is an example of an incident that could have resulted in a much more dangerous situation for our community, District says.
Campfires are strictly prohibited in any public spaces such as riverbanks, trails, beaches, parks within the District of Squamish, though they are allowed on residential property with a campfire permit. Those who want to light a campfire at home must first obtain a permit from the Fire Chief. Permits can be applied for online or in person at Alex Munro Fire Hall 1, located at 37890 Clarke Drive in Valleycliffe.
Anyone found in contravention of an open-burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150. To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation please call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.
