Plans for an expanded 8-lane swimming pool and a new ice rink are being discussed as the master planning process gets underway for Brennan Park Recreation Centre. The work on the preliminary concept for the Brennan Park Master Plan started last month and is expected to be complete in mid-2024.

Work on other improvements such as new facade, windows, exterior doors is also expected to begin this year.

District staff will take initial concepts for the pool and the rink to community groups for input, engage consultants and review the scope of work for a renovated Brennan Park. District is taking inspiration from the Clareview Recreation Centre in Edmonton for some of these concepts. The entire cost of upgrading the Brennan Park is an estimated $100 million and the improvements will be done in phases.

The phase 1 of the work on the building would involve an expanded pool and rink as well as a health and wellness centre. Other improvements will include a new covered entrance and administration offices, customer service and lobby expansion, a renovated lobby and rink washrooms as well as renovations to the rink change room. An accessible rink viewing area and mezzanine renovations are also planned.

A splash park, a new public washrooms outside the building, children’s playground, and potential outdoor covered program space is also part of the broader renovation plan.

Last year, MP Patrick Weiler announced a $11.7 million grant to retrofit the recreation centre, which will reduce the facility’s energy consumption by estimated 36.6% and greenhouse gas emissions by 294.5 tonnes annually through the replacement of the HVAC system.
